Gladwell on Geeks and Connection

This quote from an interview with Malcolm Gladwell fascinates me

“(The geek is) someone who does not require the approval of others to do what he thinks is correct, and that is an absolutely central trait for any kind of entrepreneur or innovator,” says Gladwell.

The reason it fascinates me is that — without saying so directly — Gladwell is proposing a hierarchy of relationships. The  lowest form is what is easy – craving approval of others. So being the star of the football team with a cute girlfriend in high school may actually not be a path to success. The highest form  is more challenging — relating through high level connection.

So are your connections moving to higher levels? Are you on the way up or taking the easy way out? Interesting question.
