Andrew Giambrone wrote an article for The Atlantic (reproduced in BI) bringing out something that he thinks is news – that emotional intelligence can be used for manipulation. Of course, Bob Cialdini wrote about this years ago in his book “Influence”. And negotiators have known this far longer.
Keep in mind that humans re primarily emotional animals. Our intelligence sits on top of this emotional engine like a man riding an elephant. Emotional intelligence is simply better understanding the elephant. The real game here is not how to manipulate people. It is how to use positive emotional, high energy states called engagement to more deeply connect the mind to the world around us.
