It is a bit trite to say that we are “time travelers”. We can’t help it as we are born into time as a fundamental aspect of reality. But we are time travelers in a much more interesting cognitive sense. We use our experiences and knowledge (our episodic and semantic memories) in order to imagine the future. That is how we plan for it. It is far from a perfect process. Why? Well, our episodic memories are not precise. We remember what we want to remember. And our semantic memory is limited. We don’t have great expertise to interpret what happened. So it is no surprise that our vision of the future is not that great.
What is amazing is that we do this at all. That is a marvel of cognitive process. And with some skills building, one that we can use more effectively. That “skills building” is what strategic learning is all about. Join the adventure!
